Calorie counter app with a game: train your eye for portion sizes
Most counting mistakes are not about the numbers on a label, they are about the size of the portion. Guessing games are a quick way to practise: you see a food and a portion, you make a guess, and you find out right away how close you were.
How Grammi’s daily game works
Every day, everyone gets the same 5 foods, each with a portion size: a slice of pizza, a bowl of soup, a handful of almonds. For each food you pick the calories from 4 answers. A near miss still earns points: within 10% of the real value scores 100, within 25% scores 60, within 50% scores 25. A new set arrives at midnight, and you can share your score card with friends.
The daily game is free, in the Grammi app and in your browser: play today’s game. Grammi Pro adds a Streak run mode: rounds of 5, back to back, with questions drawn from the foods you log.
Why guessing helps
Logging asks you to estimate all the time: how much oil went into the pan, how big that bowl was. Quick feedback on a few foods a day builds a sense of scale, so your estimates at home and when eating out get closer to the truth. It also shows where your intuition is off: many people are surprised by nuts, oils, dried fruit and drinks.
Ways to train your eye
- Play the daily game. Five foods take about a minute, and because everyone gets the same ones, it is easy to compare.
- Weigh a few portions at home. Put your usual serving of rice, pasta or cereal on a kitchen scale once and note the weight.
- Look up the foods you eat most. Our calorie table shows typical portions and calories per 100 g.
- Guess first, then check. Estimate, then look at the label or the scale. The gap tells you which foods to watch.
Logging what you eat
The game trains the estimate; the diary keeps the record. In Grammi, barcode scanning with no daily limit and logging every meal are free, with no ads and no account. Your diary stays on your iPhone, and the guide to counting calories for free shows a simple routine to start with.
