How to move your food diary to a new calorie app
Months of logged meals and weigh-ins are worth keeping. Changing apps does not mean starting from zero: most food diaries can export your history as a CSV file, a plain spreadsheet that other apps can read. Here is how to move it into Grammi.
Step by step
- Export a CSV from your old app. Look in its settings, profile or data section for an option such as “Export”, “Download my data” or “Export as CSV”. Some apps only offer the export on their website, or send the file by email. Export your food diary and, if it is separate, your weight history.
- Save the file where your iPhone can reach it. Put it in the Files app, in iCloud Drive or in another folder you can open on your iPhone. If it arrived by email, save the attachment to Files.
- Open the import in Grammi. Go to Settings ▸ Your data ▸ Import from another app, and choose the CSV file.
- Check the preview. Grammi reads the date, meal, food, amount and calories, whatever the file has, and shows a preview before anything is saved: how many entries, how many days and which rows it could not read.
- Import. Meals and weigh-ins keep their dates, so your history lines up with what you log from now on. Rows already in your diary are skipped, so importing the same file twice is safe.
What the import understands
Exports from different apps look different. Grammi recognises the columns by their names, in 10 languages, so the file does not need a particular layout. It handles comma and semicolon files, decimal commas, and dates with the day or the month first. Weights in kg or lb are read as weigh-ins. If a file only gives an amount like “1 cup” without grams, the entry keeps the calories from the file and you can correct the amount later.
Before you delete the old app
Keep the exported file somewhere safe until you have checked a few days in Grammi. Grammi can also export your own diary as a CSV at any time, so your data is never locked in.
The import is free, like logging every meal and barcode scanning with no daily limit. Grammi has no ads and no account; your diary stays on your iPhone.
